Clean Water & Healthy Communities Initiative

Safe Water Is More Than a Basic Need—It Is the Foundation of Good Health.

Water is essential for life, yet millions of people living in underserved communities continue to face daily challenges accessing safe drinking water and adequate sanitation. Unsafe water and poor hygiene contribute to preventable diseases that disproportionately affect children, pregnant women, older adults, and vulnerable families, placing additional strain on already limited healthcare resources.

Mercytree International Foundation believes that improving community health begins long before someone visits a clinic. Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and healthy living environments prevents disease, supports maternal and child health, improves nutrition, increases school attendance, and strengthens entire communities.

The Clean Water & Healthy Communities Initiative is Mercytree’s comprehensive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program dedicated to expanding access to safe water, promoting healthy hygiene practices, supporting community sanitation, and building sustainable solutions that improve public health across underserved communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Together with local communities, healthcare professionals, engineers, volunteers, and strategic partners, we are creating healthier environments where families can thrive.

Why Clean Water Matters

Clean water is one of the most effective investments in public health.

When communities have reliable access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation:

  • Children experience fewer preventable illnesses.
  • Mothers enjoy healthier pregnancies and safer childbirth.
  • Schools become healthier learning environments.
  • Families spend less time collecting water and more time pursuing education and livelihoods.
  • Communities reduce healthcare costs associated with waterborne diseases.
  • Local economies become stronger and more resilient.

Access to clean water transforms lives far beyond health alone—it creates opportunities for education, economic growth, dignity, and hope.

The Challenge

Across many rural and underserved communities, families continue to face challenges such as:

  • Limited access to safe drinking water
  • Waterborne diseases caused by contaminated water
  • Poor sanitation and hygiene facilities
  • Long distances to reliable water sources
  • Limited health education on hygiene and disease prevention
  • Increased health risks for women, children, and older adults

These challenges contribute to preventable illnesses that can affect every aspect of community life.

Mercytree believes that every family deserves access to safe water and a healthy environment.
